Choose Salt Lake City for Utah national park loops, Moab, Wasatch trips, Yellowstone extensions, or a longer Grand Circle route.

Use Los Angeles for Joshua Tree, Mojave, Death Valley, Pacific Coast Highway add-ons, and Southern California-to-Arizona loops.

Denver can fit Moab, western Colorado, Rocky Mountain routes, and longer Southwest loops when you want a mountain-side start.

Camper vans can be easier around desert towns, tighter park roads, one-night stops, and routes where parking flexibility matters.
Use these routes to compare pickup cities, vehicle size, driving distance, timing, and campground demand before choosing your RV.

Grand Canyon trips reward early campground planning, realistic drive time, and RV-size checks around busy South Rim parking.

Southern Utah routes need heat-aware dates, shuttle and campground planning, and a vehicle size that fits the route.

Moab trips can involve long desert drives, popular campgrounds, and heat swings, so mileage and sleeping layout matter.

Lower-desert routes need cooler-season timing, fuel planning, water planning, and careful campground choices.

A smaller RV can make desert towns, park roads, and short campground stays easier than a larger motorhome.
Match the season to the route before you choose a pickup city and RV size.
Death Valley summer camping runs mid-April to mid-October with only a few campgrounds open because midnight temperatures can still be over 100 degrees. NPS recommends developed campgrounds only in summer.
Grand Canyon South Rim Mather Campground and Trailer Village are open all year. Mather has no RV hookups, Trailer Village has full hookups, and NPS says in-park campgrounds book well in advance.
Watchman standard sites can be reserved up to 6 months ahead. Starting June 7, 2026, vehicles over 35 feet 9 inches long, 7 feet 10 inches wide, 11 feet 4 inches high, or 50,000 pounds cannot drive Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway.
NPS announced Arches will not require advanced timed-entry reservations in 2026. A valid entrance pass is still required, and Devils Garden Campground plus Fiery Furnace hikes still require reservations.
Choose the Southwest pickup city that fits your canyon, desert, or national park loop, then compare RV size, dates, mileage, and provider terms.
